Draping Venues - What do you need to know

There are often a great many constraints when planning a wedding, and one of the biggest can be in which venue to share your union with your friends and loved ones. Whether it be budget or availability, sometimes the venue we CAN have looks nothing like the dream we imagine. The good news is that with the right wedding decorator, something as drab as a sports club can become as glamorous as a palace with a few carefully draped fabrics.

A few things to consider when selecting a venue:

  • First and foremost - will everyone fit!? Capacity is obviously the place to start, but don’t forget to consider and ask about Seated Capacity (tables take up room and you don’t want guests pressed up against each other). Also consider whether you will be having a dance floor as this may affect that capacity.

  • What are the venue’s rules for decorating? Some venues will not allow you to hang lighting or drape fabrics. If, as in our example here, you want drapes this is a must on the checklist.

  • Does the Venue have the infrastructure for a decorator to take advantage of? The Best venues have places to anchor and hang things, already in place. This is definitely a bonus feature that not all venues provide and may help you in a toss up between two equally appealing options.

  • Time Constraints! Does the venue provide enough time for the Decorator to setup the room before the wedding and then take it down again(bumpout)? This is not always the case, so it’s best to check beforehand so you know what you are working with.

  • Bridal Tables - Not just a throne for the VIPs. While a Bridal table does provide a spectacular frame for the Bridal Party and a magnificent backdrop for photo opportunities, it also has a practical function - a place for the bridal party to keep their belongings and drinks - and most importantly “take a moment”. It’s a long day and heels don’t wear themselves.

Creating atmosphere with ceiling drapes

A ceiling drape can help to tie the theme of a wedding together. Whether your option is a gorgeous venue overlooking a vineyard or sporting club in the middle of town, ceiling drapes can play a huge part in finishing off a venue’s look and style.

  • Delicately draped lines of fabric, splayed in star, may highlight the jarrah beams of your venue

  • A full canopy of fabric and lighting will hide the multitude of sins witnessed in that sports bar or club.

  • A subtle canopy of fairy lights will help set the scene and make the most drab of spaces feel like a magical wonderland.

Hiding the walls of a club or hall with draping

Fabrics draped along the length of a wall can hide the everyday functionality of a hall or club. Service entrances, pictures and awards all vanish with drapes and lighting converting the mundane into the magnificent.
